Filtering Flasks

Filtering Flasks

Filtering flasks are used in numerous general laboratory procedures for rapid filtration of liquids. Typical flask design includes a conical shape with a flat bottom, tapered neck, and a sidearm for use in vacuum filtration. Filtering flasks are most commonly manufactured from borosilicate glass with thick walls that can withstand pressure under vacuum. Depending on the application, the flasks can be manufactured from other materials, such as polystyrene. Filtering flasks are available in a variety of volumes and socket sizes. Graduated and ungraduated varieties are available. Filtering flasks are also known as vacuum flasks, Buchner flasks, suction flasks, Kitasato flasks, or side-arm flasks. The flasks are often used with other accessories, such as a Buchner funnel that is fitted through a rubber bung or a Buchner ring. The sidearm can be integral to the flask or detachable, with barb-like rings on the tip to allow for connection to vacuum tubing.
