4-Methylumbelliferone is used in the determination of nitric acid and as a standard for fluorometric determination of enzyme activity. It is also used in bile therapy.

Solubility
Soluble in alcohol. Insoluble in cold water. Soluble in acetic acid, alkali and ammonium hydroxide. Slightly soluble in hot water, chloroform and diethyl ether.

Notes
Store in a cool place. Incompatible with strong bases and strong oxidizing agents.
