General Description

  • Glycogen is the main form in which energy is stored in animals as well as other higher organisms
  • It consists of a core protein unit surrounded by highly branched glucose units
  • Glycogen is synthesized through a series of enzymatic reactions and stored mainly in the liver and skeletal muscle to provide energy during fasting periods and during muscle contraction
  • Glycogen is an analog of starch, an energy store in plants, though it is both more compact and more highly branched than starch
