MEM is used for the cultivation of a wide array of cells grown in monolayers.

  • MEM-Eagle with Non-Essential Amino Acids (MEM-NEAA), without L-Glutamine, is one of the most widely utilized synthetic growth media.
  • Optional supplementation with Non-Essential Amino Acids (NEAAs) in formulations containing Hank's or Eagle's salts broadens the utility of this medium.
  • MEM is a modification of BME containing higher concentrations of essential nutrients.
  • MEM supports the cultivation of a broad range of monolayer cell cultures.
  • Research by Eagle and others demonstrated that additions to the original BME formulation could support a wider spectrum of fastidious cells in culture.
  • MEM incorporates these modifications and includes higher concentrations of amino acids to more closely approximate the protein composition of mammalian cells in culture.
  • MEM-NEAA supplementation provides nutrients that may reduce the overall biosynthetic burden on cell cultures in vitro.
