Mercury(II) trifluoroacetate promotes selective cyclization of methylthio-substituted divinyl ketones to 5-fluorocyclopentenone derivatives. It is a raw material of fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates. So it can be used in the pharmaceutical synthesis. Both linear and cross-linked copolymers of N-vinylcarbazole and methylacrylate can be prepared and mercuriated by using mercury trifluoroacetate in THF or dichloromethane.
