Thus the molecule is equivalent to an acetonitrile anion synthon with thiophenate as the leaving group. For example, in the presence of solid NaOH in DMSO, nitrobenzene gives predominantly 4-nitrophenylacetonitrile, along with some of the 2-isomer.
