Denatures and solubilizes proteins for electrophoresis.Sodium n-dodecyl sulfate is an anionic detergent used to function as a protein denaturant. It is mainly used in detergents for laundry with many cleaning applications. It finds application in the determination of protein molecular weight by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and in the analysis of hemoglobin. In food products, it is used as an emulsifying agent and a whipping aid. It is widely found in toothpastes, shampoos, shaving creams and bubble bath formulations due to its thickening effect and ability to create a lather.
