Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, 10X) is an isotonic, non-toxic to most cells and is used in biological research. It is associated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and is used to disengage attached and clumped cells. It also helps to maintain a constant pH.
